Schwinn Hope 50 power loss

Postby wickedvox on Tue Jul 27, 2010 4:27 pm

Hi all,

First timer here. I stopped at a stoplight today and had a sudden power loss. It took me a bit to get it restarted - wouldn't kick over, had to use the electric start and throttle back to get it to run. It didn't do it again, but now it's got me worried. If it happens again and I can't get it started, I'll be screwed. Any ideas? I think it could be some dirt in the fuel line or fuel jet, possibly (probably - because I know it needs cleaning) a dirty carb. It's just never happened before. I've heard of it happening with other Schwinns and chinese makes, but never has my Rosie let me down like that!

Thanks!

well your schwinn is a chinees clone and they are notorius for issues
it could be many things a bad wire some where a cdi starting to fail
i doubt it was a pluged jet as you would have had to clean the jet before it restarted the crud just can flow thru the jet once its in there

why wouldnt it kick over was it tight you could have had some sort of a soft seize situation (nromaly atributed to 2 strokes) but 4 strokes can get warm and sof seize too

start with a carb clean asap pull the plug and replace it look for damage to the plug belive it or not i have seen these cheap gy6 engines have the piston slap the plug and refire after a bit

and do a good old nut and bolt on your scoot

Thanks for the info jm! I suspect it's the cdi because the last time I did a check and change on fluids and what not, the gel was leaking out of it. I do need to tear down the carb, but I work 2 jobs, go to school, take care of the household stuff...where's a girl to find the time? I'm putting it off until fall so I can keep riding too (I know, if she breaks down in the mean time I WON'T be riding her!). So I put some carb cleaner in the gas, and the performance has improved alittle bit. As far as the kick-start goes, it just wouldn't turn over, the kick itself was fine. Thanks again! Happy scooting!

my gf has a schwinn laguna 50, it's doing the same thing. i won't key start anymore, she doesn't ride it cuz he can't keep it running with the kickstart. it spark knocks like mad. i'm pretty sure it's the voltage regulator, since the battery is fine. maybe that's your same problem??
